Coming of age in a fascist police state will not be a barrel of fun for anybody, much less for people like me, who are not inclined to suffer Nazis gladly and feel only contempt for the cowardly flag-suckers who would gladly give up their outdated freedom to live for the mess of pottage they have been conned into believing will be freedom from fear. Ho ho ho. Let's not get carried away here. Freedom was yesterday in this country. Its value has been discounted. The only freedom we truly crave today is freedom from Dumbness. Nothing else matters. . Hunter S. Thompson
About This Quote

I was born in 1976 and I grew up in a country where the government made sure we had no freedom. This quote by George Orwell is about how bad life was in the 1980's and how we should appreciate what we have today. When we think of "freedom" we think of small things, like the right to vote. However, people who lived through that period of time will tell you that it wasn't really about voting.

It was more about being able to think for yourself without fear of punishment from the government or anyone else. Being able to say what you wanted without having to worry about being beaten or killed for saying it. Orwell uses a quote from a famous Indian novel to make his point about how important it is if we can get over our fear of the "Big Brother" figure watching us every day and making sure we do what he wants us to do.
